LONG-TERM SOLUTION: MCA president tells Selangor voters to opt for a new state government to resolve crisis
IPOH: THE people of Selangor should vote for a change in the state government in the next general election to end water woes.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the Parti Keadilan Rakyat-led state government's inability to solve the water crisis issue had caused great anxiety among the public.
"The fact is that water supply is a state matter. Since they cannot handle it well, they put the blame on the Federal Government.
"They are only good at politicising issues like this and instigating the public to hate the (Barisan Nasional-led) Federal Government."
He said this after visiting the Gunung Rapat market here yesterday.
Chua said it was now up to the people themselves to take action and allow a solution for the water crisis to be finally implemented, by voting out the state government.
Selangor has disputed claims of a water shortage by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) despite warnings by the water concessionaire about a looming crisis worse than the 1998 water shortage.
Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is not in favour of the Federal Government-proposed Langat 2 project, which could ensure adequate water supply in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya until 2030.
He cited fears of a water tariff hike, among others.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had also pointed out that the onus was on the Selangor government to make a quick decision on the matter as the Federal Government had already done its part.
He said the authorities had previously predicted a water crisis in the state by 2014, and if the state government delayed its decision on Langat 2 until next year or 2014, it would be too late.
Chua also rallied BN component parties to work together to face the 13th general election.
"We need to work together to ensure victory for BN."
Chua said he had submitted MCA's electoral candidate list to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also BN chairman.
