MELBOURNE: The Malaysian who shot dead Sydney heart surgeon Dr Victor Chang will most likely be released from prison in the next few months.
The New South Wales State Parole Authority met in private yesterday and formed an intention to grant parole to Liew Chiew Seng, the Australian Associated Press reported.
The 68-year-old had spent 21 years in prison.
He was reported to be suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease.
He would most likely be granted parole when the authority meets in July.
Liew is expected to be deported immediately to Malaysia.
He was sentenced to a maximum of 26 years in prison for firing the two shots that killed Dr Chang in a failed extortion attempt in 1991.
He was refused parole last year when his 20-year non-parole period expired in July.
His partner in the murder, Phillip Lim Choon Tee, was deported to Malaysia in 2010.
He had served 18 years of his maximum 24-year sentence.
The parole authority had considered advice that time was running out for Liew to return home.
"The Serious Offenders Review Council and the Probation and Parole Service both believe Liew will be unfit to travel if his health deteriorates further," the authority said in a statement.
Liew remained in the hospital at Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney.
He will be immediately deported by the Department of Immigration upon his release. Bernama
