KULIM: At her age, 13-year-old Nur Fazira Saad from Kampung Padang Cina here should be enjoying the school holidays with her peers. Instead, she had something else on her mind -- marriage.
Last week Nur Fazira and her husband Mohd Fahmi Mohamed Alias, 19, tied the knot after obtaining the approval of the Kulim Syariah Court and the blessings of their parents.
Nur Fazira, who had stopped schooling after sitting for her Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah last year, had befriended Fahmi for some time before their relationship was discovered by the bride's father recently.
A Malay daily had quoted Nur Fazira's father, Saad Mustaffa, 43, as saying that he decided to get his daughter married to prevent the couple from indulging in immoral activities.
He said it was a hard decision to make as Nur Fazira had refused to return home after she went and stayed in Fahmi's house.
Yesterday, Fahmi's family held a small kenduri (feast) for 200 people to celebrate the couple's nuptials at their home in Kampung Naga Lilit.
Fahmi said he gathered the courage to ask Nur Fazira's father for her hand in marriage after consulting his parents.
"It is better for us to get married than do things forbidden by our religion and Nur Fazira has agreed to shoulder the responsibility of a wife at this age," said a joyful Fahmi.
He said he had no problems if Nur Fazira decided to go back to school later.
Fahmi's father Mohamed Alias Bakar, 41, said he was relieved that the wedding was over and hoped that his son would be a good husband.
He said he and his wife Zarina Abu Bakar, also 41, would guide their eldest of four children in managing his own family.
"Fahmi will help me run the family business so that he can support his wife now."
The couple is the latest teenage couple to tie the knot at a young age after a 14-year-old girl from Pekan, Pahang married her lover, 16.
A wedding video of the couple, identified only as Yana and Syafiq went viral on YouTube several months ago.
Under Malaysian Syariah Law, girls below 16 years and boys below 18 years should get the consent of the Syariah Court before they can marry.
