REMBAU: Two drivers escaped a fiery death after their vehicles were engulfed in flames when a car crashed into the rear of a trailer lorry at 8.04am yesterday.

Lorry driver Razi Jaafar, 47, was on his way to Pulau Indah from Batu Pahat, Johor, to deliver five prime movers when the accident occurred at Km231.6 of the North-South Expressway.

"I was driving in the left lane when I suddenly heard a loud bang.

"I immediately stopped along the emergency lane and was shocked to see a car stuck under the rear of the trailer.

"There was also a fire which was spreading fast.

"I ran back to my seat to grab a fire extinguisher, but there was nothing I could do as the fire had spread and was too intense," Razi said, adding that the car driver had already scrambled to safety.

Razi said he quickly disconnected the trailer head and drove it about 20 metres away before calling the Fire and Rescue Department.

Rembau Fire and Rescue Department chief Zamrus Zainal said firemen managed to put out the fire within 10 minutes with help from the Senawang and Alor Gajah Fire and Rescue Departments.

The car driver, who was unidentified, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Seremban Hospital while the lorry driver was unhurt.

"The trailer and its cargo, along with the car, were destroyed in the fire," added Zamrus.
