SELAYANG: A WIREMAN was charged in the magistrate's court yesterday with the murder of an accounts clerk who was splashed with acid during a botched snatch theft incident last month.

N. Sritharan, 19, and another person still at large, were alleged to have murdered S. Usharani, 46, at a bus stop along Jalan Ipoh in Rawang at  7am on March 27. He was arrested on April 12.

The victim was waiting to take a bus to her workplace in Sentul when the two youths tried to snatch her chain. When she resisted, Usharani was  splashed with acid. She suffered burns to her face and upper body and died at the Selayang Hospital on April 16.

She is survived by her husband R. Muragan, a mathematics teacher, and three children between the ages of 11 and 21.

In court yesterday, Sritharan indicated he understood  the charge which was read to him. No plea was recorded.

He faces the mandatory death sentence if convicted.  Magistrate Namirah Hanum Mohamed Albaki fixed June 6 for mention.
