PUTRAJAYA: The Millions of Youth gathering can help put Malaysia on the world map, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Senator Gan Ping Sieu said yesterday.
"The ministry wants to make the youth carnival one of the top 10 carnivals in the world, such as Europe's biggest carnival, the Notting Hill Gate Carnival," he said.
He said the Millions of Youth gathering would provide many programmes and opportunities for youth.
"There are more than 500 programmes that will be held at the carnival and there will be something for everyone," Gan said at a press conference on the National Youth Day yesterday.
Gan said 200,000 people were expected at the five-day carnival, which starts today.
This year's carnival is themed "Millions of opportunities, thousands of happiness" and sees various performances from sports and arts to music.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will do a walkabout at the carnival on Saturday.
Among the activities are an international youth jazz festival, a Putrajaya nite run and the Standard Chartered run.
There will also be attempts to break the Malaysia Book of Records in the event categories, such as biggest mass wedding, largest stargazing gathering and biggest cosplay event.
Fashion shows, competitions, cultural shows and flash mob performances are the other activities.
