BATU KURAU: About 700 Perak Pas members, from Batu Kurau and Kubu Gajah state constituencies joined Umno yesterday.

They handed their application forms to Larut Umno division chief Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin at a gathering here.

Hamzah said it was a sign of better things to come for Barisan Nasional in the state.

"With their joining BN, the majority of votes (for BN) in the two seats will surely increase."

One of the new Umno members, Abd Wahab Mahmud, 43, said he had previously supported Pas as he thought the party's struggles were for Islam but, in actual fact, the leaders were in it for power.

The former Titi Kasai Pas branch secretary said he was attracted to join Umno because of the leadership of Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Another new member, Mohd Sulaiman Abd Wahab, 72, said Umno was a good party as it had been fulfilling its promises to care for the people.

Felda settler Zaharudin Zakaria, 55, said opposition parties were only good at making empty promises.
