UNDER DISCUSSION: It wants to contest Chenderiang state seat
TAPAH: DAP will pressure opposition ally Parti Keadilan Rakyat to give up the Chenderiang state seat in the next general election.
DAP lost the seat in successive elections from 1986 to 1999. It handed over the seat to PKR to contest it in 2004 and 2008.
A DAP source told the New Straits Times: "We stand a better chance of rattling, if not upsetting, Barisan Nasional in Chenderiang, compared with PKR."
DAP expects strong objections from PKR but will continue to pressure the latter.
The former believes its strong showing in 2008 justifies it contesting the seat.
BN has held the seat with comfortable majorities since 1986.
It may retain MCA's Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon for the seat.
DAP's nominee is Amani William-Hunt Abdullah, or Bah Tony, 58, an Orang Asli lawyer and activist.
When asked what would happen if PKR refused to give up the seat, the DAP source said: "We will push for the seat. We will use reason to convince PKR to hand over the seat to us.
"In case PKR does not want to give in, then we have to think of another way."
The option, however, would not entail DAP swapping seats with PKR, the source said.
In the worst-case scenario, the DAP source said the party may push for its candidate to contest in Chenderiang under PKR's banner.
A state PKR leader said the party was aware that DAP wanted the seat back.
He, however, said that the matter was being discussed between the two parties.
