SWEEP: FT's rhythmic gymnast leads team to overall title on final day of competition
AS expected, Federal Territories' Fatin Zakirah Jalany led her team to a sweep of the gold medals in the Malaysia Games rhythmic gymnastics competition winning three of the four gold medals on offer on the final day of competition yesterday.
Fatin won the ball, clubs and hoops routines at the Pahang Sports Complex Gymnastics Stadium, only losing out to teammate Tai Qing Tong in the ribben event, where she took silver.
The result saw FT emerge champions with a haul of six gold and four silver with Selangor a distant second with one silver and four bronze.
Hosts Pahang and Terengganu were tied for third with a bronze a piece.
Despite her overwhelming success, Fatin said she was alittle disappointed to miss out on the ribbon gold.
"The ribbon stuck around my leg in my last element and that lost it for me," said the 15-year-old.
"I was expecting to win all four, however, I am glad that it was my good friend and teammate Qing Tong who won and helped us (FT) to win all the events.
"It is still a great achievement and I am very grateful to my coaches and my parents who have sacrificed so much for me to be here."
The Bukit Jalil Sports school student, who on Sunday had won the individual all-round gold, said her sporting career will now have to take a back seat as she prepares for the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examinations.
"I have sacrificed a lot for gymnastics and now I want to focus on my studies as I am targeting 7A's in my PMR exams," she said.
"I will likely not compete again in a major competition till next year, however, I will still continue to work hard after the exams as I hope to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the very least before I retire."
