Nik Aziz adamant on talks' conditions

KOTA BARU: Pas spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat yesterday insisted that Umno fulfil certain conditions in order to engage in a muzakarah (dialogue) with the party.

He said other events, such as a marriage, also required a couple to follow a set of conditions such as agreeing on the amount of dowry before they tied the knot.

"The proposed muzakarah follows a similar procedure. There is no way a muzakarah can be held without conditions," he told reporters after witnessing a signing ceremony between state government's investment arm Ladang Sungai Terah Sdn Bhd and Modipalm Sdn Bhd to build an oil palm processing plant in Kelantan.

Nik Aziz, who is also menteri besar, said the muzakarah should carry the theme: "Why Umno rejects Islam" as the main condition for the dialogue to proceed.

He said Pas was sincere in its intention to have the muzakarah as Islam required its adherents to be guided by sincerity in their lives.

In Kuala Lumpur, Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, meanwhile, has rejected the dialogue. He said the muzakarah was one of Umno's political agenda in view of the coming 13th general election.

"This a non-issue. We want to hold talks with NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to counter allegations made about Pas' struggles," he told a press conference at Pas headquarters.

"Pas has no intention to hold talks with Umno. What's the point? We are now in the midst of preparing for the next general election."

In Seremban, Bernama reported Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom as saying that there should be no conditions for the muzakarah.

He said in Islam, holding a muzakarah was encouraged but the intention must be sincere.

"To me it is a gift from God if we can all sit together and look at our differences and handle them in the right manner. There should be no conditions.

"With our myriad of meeting points, why do we seek to enlarge and give priority to our differences," he said after a ceramah.

Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said Nik Aziz was not sincere when he insisted on imposing conditions for the muzakarah with Umno.
