KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth has demanded an apology on behalf of the country's Indian community from Pas vice-president Salahuddin Ayub for making a statement likening the Thaipusam procession to a street demonstration.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan issued a 24-hour ultimatum and said Salahuddin should be fully accountable for his statement during a debate titled "Street Demonstration: Demolishing or Strengthening Democracy" on Tuesday.

He added that a police report had also been lodged on the matter.

"The statement has raised dissatisfaction among the Indian community. I'm surprised how a mature member of parliament could utter such words. All the more linking it to the religious ceremony and beliefs of a race," he said in a statement yesterday.
