KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has pledged his commitment to assist Malaysian non-government organisations (NGOs) in their quest to provide humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees.

The deputy prime minister gave his assurance to three Syrian ulama, who called on him at his residence here yesterday.

The ulama, led by Sheikh Dr Khalik Kindowere, were on a one-week visit to seek aid for the people of strife-torn Syria.

Their meeting with Muhyiddin was arranged by a group of 30 NGOs called Gabungan Selamatkan Syria (GSS), or Save Syria Confederation, said the Deputy Prime Minister's Office in a statement.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, GSS secretariat chairman Naim Jusri said the confederation was glad that the deputy prime minister supported the humanitarian effort.

"More proactive steps should be taken to show our sympathy for what is happening in Syria.

"We must help the people who have been displaced because of the turmoil in any way we can." Bernama
