SERIAN: A soldier was killed and his relative critically injured when their motorcycle collided with an express bus at Km16 of Jalan Kuching-Sri Aman here late last night.
Private Mohammad Haziq Irsyaduddin Ismail, 23, of the Armed Forces’ Third Brigade, died on the spot in the 11.20pm accident.
The motorcycle’s pillion rider, Eirsard Emier Yahya, 20, was rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, near here, with serious injuries.
It is learnt that the duo, en route from a market in town, was making a right turn at a junction near Kampung Hulu Serian here when they were rammed by the bus from the rear.
The impact of the crash was so great that Eirsard was flung from the motorcycle and landed on the back of a passing four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle, which was travelling from Sri Aman in the opposite lane.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the body of the soldier was sent to the Serian Hospital for a post-mortem.
Drivers of the 4WD vehicle and express bus, as well as the bus’ passengers, were not injured.
Police recorded a statement from the 64-year-old bus driver to facilitate investigation into the mishap.
