ALOR STAR: Kedah-born Faiz Subri, the winner of Fifa Puskas Award, will be awarded with the Bintang Semangat Jerai Kedah in conjunction with the Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah’s 89th birthday celebrations next week.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah in making the announcement today, said Faiz will also be getting a cash reward from the state government for his outstanding achievement in becoming the first ever Asian footballer to clinch the award.
“The Sultan has agreed to bestow the award to Faiz as an acknowledgement for his achievement in winning the Fifa Puskas Award.
“As for the cash reward, we will not announce the amount until we present it to him,” he told newsmen after handing glasses to needy students in Alor Star Parliamentary constituency.
Faiz made history when he became the first ever Malaysian and Asian to clinch the prestigious award, presented to him at star-studded 2016 FIFA Football Awards in Zurich on Monday.
The 29-year-old Penang player who hails from Ayer Hitam in Jerlun, received the highest votes from fans all over the world for his ‘physics defying’ free-kick, defeating two other finalists for the goal of the year award.
Ahmad Bashah added that the state would also consider Faiz as a Muafakat Icon for Kedah, to inspire youths in the state to emulate his achievement.
