DOG ATTACK: Banned, yet this breed is on salein pet shops

MY heart goes out to the family of 74-year-old Yip Sin Hua, who died after being attacked by a dog. Such incidences of people being mauled by dogs is one too many.

What surprises me is that although this breed of dog has been banned by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council, it is still openly sold in most pet shops.

This particular dog is a cross between a miniature bull terrier and an American Staffordshire terrier. These dogs were initially bred to hunt and to drive livestock but it was later found that they had a tendency to be aggressive towards other dogs. Soon, they started ending up in illegal dog-fighting rings.

This breed can also be very temperamental and aggressive towards children. It is known to be a one-owner pet.

Some people might not agree with me and insist that dogs of any breed are not aggressive, but that they are trained to be aggressive.

Some might even say that such dogs could have been ill-treated as a puppy and because of that they turn out to be aggressive.

Whatever said and done, nothing will change the fact that an innocent man had lost his life because of another dog attack. The debate will start once again on who is to be blamed, the owner or the dog.

Besides, we don't hear about the chihuahua, another breed of dog, killing anyone, do we?

Mixed breeds, like this one which mauled an elderly manjogger, can be temperamental
