HEART TRANSPLANT GIRL: Farewell to a gutsy, cheerful lass

TEE Hui Yee, who was dubbed the girl with a mechanical heart, has died ("Heart transplant girl dies" -- NST, Sept 19).

She died on Tuesday, 10 days before her 19th birthday, at the Batu Pahat Hospital due to complications.

She lived with a mechanical heart for a year before a compatible heart was donated and transplanted in her body.

That was five years ago. Since then, I had not read of her in the newspapers. Then suddenly, news of her death was reported in all major newspapers.

Even though she died at a young age, I hope that the last five years were the most wonderful years of her life.

Hui Yee's family and friends, as well as the doctors who carried out the transplant, the nurses and other caregivers at the National Heart Institute who knew her, will surely miss her.

Goodbye, Hui Yee, I will always remember you as the gutsy girl with a cheerful smile even when you were in pain.

Mohd Faizal Abdullah, Kuala Lumpur
