THE Dewan Negara observed a minute's silence for the late Datuk P.K. Subbaiyah, who died on April 18.
I knew him personally. We were called, together with another lawyer, Norshidah, to the Malaysian Bar in 1988 before justice Wan Adnan Ismail, the first call in Bahasa Malaysia at the Penang High Court.
A humble man, Subbaiyah once worked in the Penang Port Commission. He did not change when he entered politics, leaving it upon his demise as one of the few unscathed by the drama of Malaysian realpolitik.
May we see another Subbaiyah in our politicians. He proved that it is possible to remain honest despite pressures to relent.
My condolences to Datin Vallini and her children.
