I APPLAUD the move by the Perdana Global Peace Foundation to call on neighbouring countries to assist the Rohingya community, who are under persecution in their own country.
Hundreds of thousands have reportedly been forced to leave their land after being continuously attacked, and must now live in despicable conditions.
Malaysia ought to play a pivotal role in giving them refugee status, instead of just appealing to Bangladesh to accept them.
We are quick to react and offer our assistance towards the Palestinians, which I don't deny is a noble action.
But why the double standards towards the Rohingya? Why are we apathetic to a society who clearly is in dire need of our intervention?
I appeal to the government to seriously consider taking more of them in, be it as refugees or as foreign workers.
The present Rohingya community in Malaysia has posed no danger whatsoever to the locals and for that we shouldn't be wary of their presence in our country.
Without a doubt they are in need of a better life, and we as a civil society, have a duty to give it to them.
Don't deny them employment opportunities. Doors should be opened for them to work in various sectors.
It is high time we reconsidered our labour agreement with one of our neighbours and give others, who truly want to earn a decent living in Malaysia, a chance.
We must continue to apply pressure on the Myanmar government at every level and help restore the dignity of the Rohingya community.
