TAMIL NEW YEAR: Celebrate it in the 1Malaysia spirit

TAMIL people the world over will be celebrating Tamil New Year this Friday.

There were several letters on the Ponggal festival and whether it should also be celebrated as the Tamil New Year.

I wish to say something about the Tamil new year from the Christian point of view.

Tamil New Year is always celebrated in April. I agree with Ariff Shah R.K that the Ponggal festival is not the same as the Tamil New Year. We should not change the date of the festivals.

The problem can be resolved depending on how the Tamils celebrate it.

The Tamil New Year, although connected with Hinduism, can be celebrated in a Christian way. Hindus go to the temple on this day to pray and get blessings of Lord Shiva.

Likewise, Tamil Christians can go to church to celebrate the new year and get the blessings of Christ.  There is nothing wrong in it.

I hope all the Tamils, regardless of religion, will  celebrate the upcoming new year in  the 1Malaysia spirit.
