THANK YOU, PM: Community honoured with awards for leaders

RECENTLY, two leaders of the Mar Thoma Syrian Christian community were honoured for their contributions and services to the country.

Tan Sri V.C. George was conferred the Panglima Setia Mahkota award, which carries the title "Tan Sri", by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. After a distinguished legal and judicial career, he retired as a Court of Appeal judge. He was also a past president of the Royal Selangor Club.

Another stalwart of the community, Datuk Varghese George, was conferred a datukship recently by the Yang Dipertua of Penang. Following a notable private legal practice, he was appointed judicial commissioner and is now a judge in the Penang High Court.

The Mar Thoma Syrian Christian community, whose members came from Kerala, India, and who number about 2,000 nationwide, is truly honoured by these awards.

The small community is very much an asset to the nation and its members have served the public and private sectors in eminent positions.

The community is proud of being Malaysians who are bestowed with ample opportunities to better themselves, and its achievements are proof of this.

Younger members of the community are well poised with better academic credentials than their predecessors to play a major role in the nation's transformation process to achieve Vision 2020.

Another piece of good news is that just a month ago, the land on which the Kuala Lumpur Mar Thoma Church is situated in Jalan St Thomas, off Jalan Ipoh, was given a new lease of 30 years. This was made possible by the personal intervention and assistance of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The Kuala Lumpur Church parishioners and Mar Thomites nationwide are grateful for the kind and magnanimous gesture, which will long be remembered.
