THE PRIME MINISTER: Approachable Najib wins people's hearts
MANY firsts were accomplished during our prime minister's recent visit to the town of Sandakan where I live.
To the ordinary people here, past prime ministers were VVIPs about whom they only read about in newspapers or saw on television. They might have been easily accessible to the privileged and the rich, but not so to the ordinary folk.
But last Saturday, Prime Minster Datuk Seri Najib Razak appeared in person to the vastly unbelieving crowd at both the Kim Fung and Mawar markets here in Sandakan.
Many must have found it hard to believe that this most powerful man of our nation was here to visit them. This has never happened before. And he was so approachable and nice. He was seen shaking hands with everyone and had his pictures taken with them.
Ah Jib Gor, accompanied by Sandakan member of parliament Datuk V.K. Liew, had breakfast with the people at the market place much to their delight.
A picture published in the New Straits Times the following day, of an old lady grasping the hand of her prime minister with much affection and emotion says it all. Our prime minister really has broken the code. That to me is truly transformational.
Cynics say it is all part of his election campaign. Well, campaign or not, he seems to enjoy his walkabouts to meet the people.
I think he will go down in history as the people's PM!
