BADMINTON: Soon Kit calls for end to 16-year drought
HONG Kong Open champion Esther Cheah held her nerves to win her second Masters title of the year when she clinched the Daejeon International Open in South Korea yesterday.
Esther, the only non-Korean to qualify for the stepladder after tying fourth with South Korean national bowler Kang Hyun Jin with 1,842, worked hard to earn her title.
Esther and top seed Lee Na Young of Daejeon Metropolitan City were tied in the stepladder final after scoring 236 but the Malaysian made good in the one-ball roll-off that followed.
In the unusual one-ball roll-off instead of a ninth and tenth frame format, Esther struck first while Na Young left another single pin handing the title to the former.
"This has been an amazing two days for me," said the 26-year-old Esther, whose Hong Kong Open title was achieved last month.
"First I had to roll a big game to make the finals, then I had to endure a one-ball roll-off to win."
Esther (214) took out two Koreans, third seed Lee Yeon Ji of Seoul Metropolitan City (184) and Hyun Jin (201) in the first match to face second seed, Son Yun Hee of Yong In City Hall.
Esther sailed past the third Korean, 223-180 to earn a crack at the title.
