BADMINTON: Wei Feng slays Taufik

CHONG Wei Feng toppled former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia to join Liew Daren in the second round of the Singapore Open super series yesterday.

Wei Feng notched a 21-17, 21-19 win over Taufik, who also fell in the preliminary round of the Indonesia Open last week, to set up a second round meeting with Hu Yun of Hong Kong today.

Daren beat Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia 21-9, 24-22 in his opening match and will take on second seed Lee Hyun Il of South Korea, who beat P. Kashyap of India 21-18, 21-12, in the second round.

Hafiz Hashim crashed out in the first round when he lost 10-21, 21-14, 21-18 to Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.

In the men's doubles, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong registered an easy 21-9, 21-13 win over India's Tarun Kona-Arun Vishnu, and will next play Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.

Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah were also through after beating Andreij Ashmarin-Sergey Shumilkin of Russia 21-18, 21-11 while Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming defeated Germany's Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler 21-14, 10-21, 21-13 in their opening match.

Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari bowed out after crashing 21-8, 21-13 to Fang Chieh Min-Lee Sheng Mu of Taiwan while world junior champions Nelson Heg-Teo Ee Yi lost 21-16, 21-15 to Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawan of Japan.

Olympic-bound women's singles Tee Jing Yi was also sent packing in the first round, bowing to Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungpan 15-21, 21-10, 21-19.
