Badminton / World Junior Championships: Peng Soon-Liu Ying struggle in Germany

MIXED doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were the sole Malaysian survivors in the Bitburger Open as Chan Kwong Beng crashed out in the quarter-finals in Saarbruecken, Germany on Friday.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who are competing in the grand prix gold event to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the London Olympics, surprisingly struggled to a 21-19, 15-21, 21-14 win over Labar Ronan-Laura Choinet of France in the last eight.

They played China's Liu Xiaolong-Cheng Shu of China in a late semi-final match last night.

Kwong Beng was unable get past the quarter-finals when he suffered a 21-16, 17-21, 21-14 defeat to Hans Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark.

Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui's battle to qualify for the Olympics took a beating when they lost 21-17, 16-21, 22-20 to young Thai pair Savitree Amitrapai-Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

Only 16 pairs will qualify for the Olympics and the ranking points earned in the Bitburger Open are not sufficient for Pei Tty-Eei Hui to improve their current position at No 20.
