Cruise for singles hopefuls


WORLD junior champion Zulfadli Zulkifli and 2016 project squad members Misbun Ramdan Misbun and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin advanced to the third round of the Indonesia Open grand prix gold in Palembang yesterday.

Zulfadli defeated Febriyan Irvannaldi of Indonesia 21-16, 21-8 and will play Alamsyah Yunus for a place in the quarter-finals today.

Ramdan, who beat Senatria Agus Setia Putra 21-11, 21-14, takes on second seed Sho Sasaki of Japan while Iskandar, who overcame another unheralded Indonesian Siswanto 21-13, 21-19, plays fourth seed Dionisius Hayom Rumbaka next.

Another back-up player Arif Latif also made it to the third round after beating Arif Gifar Ramadhan 21-19, 21-19 and will meet China's Guo Kai today.

Goh Sooon Huat was also through after beating Reksy Megananda of Indonesia 21-13, 21-17.

In the men's doubles, new pair Lutfi Zaim Khalid-Teo Kok Siang stunned second seeds Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata of Japan 21-16, 21-15 and will meet Indonesian junior pair Hafiz Faisal-Putra Eka Rhoma in the second round.

However, Tan Wee Kiong-Hoon Thien How, who reached the quarter-finals of the China Masters and Japan Open, were sent packing in the first round by Indonesia's Rendra Wijaya-Rian Sukmawan who secured a 21-17, 16-21, 21-15 win.

Independent pair Zakry Latif-Fairuizizuan Tazari crashed out in the first round after losing 22-20, 18-21, 23-21 to Indonesian back-up pair Rahmat Adianto-Berry Angriyawan in the first round.
