MALAYSIA are assured of a final berth in the men's doubles as Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and professional pair Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari will square off in the semi-finals of the Thailand Open grand prix gold in Bangkok today.
Thien How-Wee Kiong did well to beat fifth seeds Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno of Japan 21-18, 21-15 in 28 minutes yesterday.
The pair were part of the Malaysian squad which fumbled in the Thomas Cup Finals in Wuhan last month where only Thien How saw action with Tan Boon Heong.
Zakry-Fairuz had it easy against South Korean back-up pair Kang Ji Wook-Lee Hong Je as they secured a 21-18, 21-14 win in 29 minutes.
It is Zakry-Fairuz's second consecutive semi-final appearance after having reached the same stage in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold last month.
Thien How-Wee Kiong look good to advance to the final while Zakry-Fairuz will be relying on their experience to overcome their compatriots today.
Mixed doubles Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo found the going tough against top seeds Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen of Denmark and suffered a 21-17, 21-18 defeat.
