THE future of Malaysian badminton looks bleak as none of the second stringers made the main draw of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta yesterday.
Arif Latif was the only Malaysian to advance to the second round of the men's singles qualifiers when he overcame Thailand's Suppanyu Avihingsanam 21-14, 17-21, 21-14.
However, the World No 57 lost steam in the next round, bowing out 21-15, 21-19 to India's World No 42 Sourabh Varma.
Misbun Ramadan Misbun, a finalist at the French International in April, fared badly, losing 21-16, 21-9 to Eric Pang of the Netherlands in the first round.
In doubles, former world junior champions Chooi Kah Ming and Ow Yao Han lost 21-16, 16-21, 21-19 to Indonesia's Arya Maulana Adiartama-Edi Subaktiar in the first round of qualifiers.
The scratch pairing of Tan Bin Shen and Scotland's Robert Blair also failed to make an impression, going down 21-18, 21-18 to Indonesia's Ronald Alexander-Geh Selvanus.
