EASY: Chong Wei makes final after overcoming Tommy
LEE Chong Wei stayed on course to win his fourth consecutive title in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold event after overcoming stubborn resistance from Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in Johor Baru yesterday.
Chong Wei, who has won the event since 2009, survived another slow start in the first game before earning a 21-18, 21-18 win over Tommy in the semi-final encounter which lasted 46 minutes.
He trailed Tommy from the beginning of the match until 14-16 before making his move and secured the first game 21-18 and had taken a 20-12 lead only to allow the Indonesian to secure six points on the trot before earning his place in the final.
"I started slowly but I have reached the final again. There is just another match to win my fourth title and I want to put up my best performance tomorrow (today)," said Chong Wei after his victory.
"Tommy has also improved since the last time I played him. I have also polished on my netplay since the final of the India Open and I am looking forward to the final."
Chong Wei will meet Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia, who defeated Hafiz Hashim 21-19, 21-21-10 in the last four, today.
Men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong were forced to work hard for their 17-21, 21-16, 21-13 win by professional pair Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari before advancing to the final.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong will play former world junior champions Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming, who defeated Gan Teik Chai-Ong Soon Hock 20-22, 21-6, 21-16, in the final.
Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui also advanced to the final after beating unheralded Japanese pair Yuki Fukushima-Yui Miyauchi 21-19, 21-10 and will meet Singapore's Shinta Mulia Sari-Yao Lei, who beat national pair Goh Liu Ying-Lim Yin Loo 21-18, 21-14, today.
Mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Liu Ying also stayed on course win their first title of the year when they defeated Riky Widianto-Puspita Richi Dili of Indonesia 21-18, 21-18 and will meet another Indonesia pair Irfan Fadhillah-Weni Anggraini in the final.
