KELANTAN sent out an early warning that they are in no mood to surrender their Malaysian Schools (MSSM) Under-18 title with a one wicket win over fellow contenders Kuala Lumpur in a Group A match in Nusajaya, Johor Baru yesterday.
KL, who beat Kedah by 66 runs in their opening match on Monday, were all out for 154 with Niroshan De Silva just falling short of half a century when he was bowled and caught by Amiruddin Azhar for 46.
The City boys also rode on good scores from opening bat Izzat Mustafa Albakri (33), and Nik Nazran Sufri Nik Anuay (34 not out).
Kelantan took up the challenge and reached 155 in 29.3 overs with Khairul Azuddin Zaidi top-scoring with 32. Muhd Mahadi Muda (26), Nasiruddin Mazlan (22), Mahathir Mohd Razali (17), Zulfahmie Mat Pergau (16) were others who reached double scores in Kelantan's total.
Negri Sembilan notched their second win in as many matches after defeating hosts Johor by 55 runs.
Batting first, Negri posted an impressive 147 in their allotted 30 overs with Abdul Hadi Halim, who top-scored with 34 runs, ably assisted by Shahrul Arifin's 32 not out. Other double figure scorers were skipper Khairul Izwan Razman (18) and Mohd Ikmal Hisham Azman (11).
Johor looked good at the start but once opening bats Syukran Ahmad and Fareed Abdul Hadi were run out after posting 36 and 11 respectively, the hosts crumbled with Hamimy Azri Halim (11) the only other batsman to achieve double figures.
Shahrul was also Negri's top bowler, grabbing two wickets without conceding a run.
