ATHLETICS: MAU expects green-light for AGM

THE Malaysian Athletic Union (MAU) expects to be given the all-clear today to proceed with its oft-delayed annual general meeting and elections on Sunday.

MAU officials held a meeting with Sports Commissioner Datuk Yassin Salleh yesterday to resolve conflicting articles in its constitution which delayed the opening of nomination forms on Saturday.

But MAU vice-president Datuk R. Annamalai is confident of receiving approval from Yassin today before revealing the nominations for Sunday's elections.

"The Sports Commissioner said he will get back to us tomorrow morning (today) after checking for clerical and other errors.

"There should not be a problem in opening the nominating forms later in the day," said Annamalai yesterday.

The conflicting articles relate to the old provision for staggered elections which was not deleted when the constitution was amended to allow for biennial instead of annual elections.

Unlike previous years, all posts in MAU will be up for election under the new constitution including that of the president's.

Incumbent president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim is expected to be challenged by former deputy president Datuk Danyal Balagopal and Negri Sembilan AAA president Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad. By Devinder Singh
