BASKETBALL: Dragons will not let guard down

THERE will be no letting up for the Westports Malaysia Dragons when they play their final Asean Basketball League regular season game against the Singapore Slingers today despite having wrapped up a playoff spot.

The Dragons will be looking to use home-court advantage at the Maba Stadium to extend their four-game winning run and carry the momentum into the semi-final series against either San Miguel Beermen or the Philippine Patriots.

Coach Ariel Vanguardia said after last weekend's 94-79 home win over Thailand Slammers, which clinched a third consecutive post-season berth for the Dragons, that he wants to see the same determination against the Slingers.

"I'm challenging the team to show our real game. That's the game before the playoffs and that's the game to give us momentum going into the playoffs." said Vanguardia.

Captain B. Guganeswaran echoed Vanguardia, saying that teamwork helped the Dragons get back on their feet after enduring a wretched seven-game slump prior to their current winning streak.

"It's great to be back playing as a team again. We always had that belief to get into the playoffs and now we're looking forward to it," he said after the win over the Slammers.

Dragons are currently tied for third with the Indonesia Warriors but a win today will edge the Malaysian team ahead of the Warriors on a better head-to-head record.

TODAY: Malaysia Dragons v Singapore Slingers (Maba Stadium, 8pm), Saigon Heat v San Miguel Beermen (8pm).
