HOTSHOT: Pahang shooter bags two, eyes more
AINA Zahiran is really grateful that she followed her parents advice to go into shooting as she opened Pahang's account with a golden double at the Pahang Sports Complex range in Kuantan yesterday.
After picking up four gold medals in Malacca two years ago, there was little doubt Aina was headed for a repeat performance with the only question being which events she would dominate.
Aina, 18, improved on her silver medal effort in Malacca to win the 50m rifle three position individual event with a score of 567 points, four ahead of teammate Nurul Izzatil Zulkifli, while helping Pahang retain the team gold after accumulating 1,682 points.
"The competition here was not very tough and I was able to win without posting my best score (573).
"I knew I would be able to win gold and now my focus is on my pet event, the rifle prone," said Kuala Lumpur-born Aina, who grew up in Kuantan.
Aina is the defending champion in the 50m rifle prone and will also be seeking a medal in the 10m air rifle where Pahang will defend the team title.
"I'm going to try to break the record (594) I set in Malacca. But I've got to watch out for all these new shooters who are just as keen to win medals.
"It's hard to gauge the competition because someone could just emerge out of nowhere to win," added Aina, who looks up to national shooter Nur Suryani Taibi for inspiration.
Pahang won two more gold medals in shooting yesterday through Nurrahimin Abdul Halim in the men's air rifle and the men's 25m sport individual team event with a new Games record of 1,698 points, erasing the old record of 1,669 which Pahang also held.
The remaining gold medals were won by Akmal Arif Abdul Latif of Perak in the sport pistol individual and Federal Territories in the air rifle team event.
