NO records were broken at the National Shooting Championships yesterday but still the opening day turned out to be a memorable one for Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan and Muslifah Zulkifli at the Subang Range.
Hasli, a former Olympian, posted a 576 total to edge national record holder Hafiz Adzha by 12 points for the men's 25-metre rapid fire gold medal while Khalel Abdullah clinched bronze on 551.
Khalel, however, made amends by winning the team event with Riduan Mohamad and Aziz Yunus, who posted a combined 1,621 series for Armed Forces while Pahang finished second on 1,516.
Newcomer Ashraf Izham upset the odds by clinching the 10m air rifle gold by posting 687.7 points ahead of national shooters Muhd Zubair Mohd (686) and Hadafi Jaafar (683.9).
Muslifah, a bronze medallist at last year's Indonesia Sea Games, turned in a respectable performance to win the women's 50m three-position individual and team events.
Muslifah, who often plays second fiddle to national record holder Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi, scored 677.6 points to finish ahead of Shahera Rahim Raja (673) and Aina Zahiran (670).
In the team event, Muslifah, Shahera and Haslisa Hamed posted a combined 1,724 series to take the gold, 17 points ahead of Pahang, led by Nur Ayuni Farhana Abd Halim.
It was a sweet victory for Muslifah as she was using an old rifle yesterday.
"All my teammates in the national squad were using their new rifles for the first time except me. I feel more comfortable with my old weapon," she said at the National Shooting Range.
"My gamble paid off but of course, I will have to adapt to the new rifle after this competition."
The championships continue today with the rifle and pistol events.
