IN CONTROL: East Malaysian state take top honours on opening day of competition
SARAWAK exponents blew their opponents away as they grabbed three of the six gold medals contested on the first day of the Malaysia Games taekwondo competition at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Sports Complex in Gambang yesterday.
Their dominance was exemplified by Tiong Hung Teng, who scored an incredible 20-2 win over the hapless Akmal Faiz Ahmad Kamal of Negri Sembilan in the men's middleweight final.
Earlier, Sarawak won their first gold of the Games through Dayang Farhanah Abang Sazali, who edged Pahang's Farah Hanum Mahamat 13-12 in the women's flyweight final.
Marlisa Tee Zulariffen followed up with the second gold in the women's welterweight final when she avenged the family honour after younger sister Marena Tee's defeat in the middleweight final, with an 11-1 beating of Terengganu's Nurul Adni Nik Hassan.
Sarawak team manager Chung Chuang Pin was delighted with the performance of his exponents and hinted there will be more gold medals to come over the next two days.
"These exponents have all come through the various local meets in the state and we identified the talent and built them up over a period. They have been in training for the last three months for the Malaysia Games and those who won today (yesterday) delivered as expected.
"We will try our best to be among the best but that really depends on the level of the competition," said Chuang Pin yesterday.
The remaining three gold medals were shared among exponents from Kedah, Sabah and hosts Pahang.
After the disappointment of Farah Hanum's defeat, Noraslinda Johari raised the roof of the hall when she claimed Pahang's second gold medal of these Games with a 6-4 win over Sarawak's Marena in the middleweight final.
Bryan Kinson won Sabah's first gold medal with a 14-10 win over Fikren Ahmad Kamal of Negri in the men's welterweight final while Al-Danial Rosli denied Selangor's Danial Azri the gold in the men's flyweight final with a 4-2 victory.
Six more gold medals will be contested today in the men's and women's bantamweight, lightweight and heavyweight categories.
