THE Malaysia Games women's weightlifting competition witnessed Sabah's Franceay Titus successfully break the national record in the 58kg category snatch event at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Convention Hall in Pekan yesterday.
Franceay recorded a lift of 81kg in the snatch to win the gold and better the old national record of 80kg as well as the Malaysia Games meet record of 72kg. She also took the clean and jerk event gold with a lift of 95kg which shattered the old meet record of 90kg. The national record is 101kg.
Franceay said she was delighted to have broken the national record but felt she should have done the same for the clean and jerk event.
"I was expecting to get the clean and jerk (national record) as well. Unfortunately I was a little tired during the event and could only break the meet record."
Meanwhile, Penang's Azizah Fadzil received somewhat of a consolation after not being able to compete in the London Olympics when she won two gold medals as well yesterday.
Azizah emerged victorious in the 53kg category, winning gold in both the snatch and clean and jerk events with lifts of 64kg and 80kg respectively. The women's 48kg weight category saw Pahang's Rosmah Abdullah clinch the gold medals in both the snatch and clean and jerk events with lifts of 60kg and 68kg.
