CYCLING/TOUR OF SINGKARAK: Zamri crowded out at finish line
ZAMRI Salleh missed out on a podium finish when the Terengganu Cycling Team rider finished fourth in the 77.6 kilometre opening stage of the Tour of Singkarak in Sawahlunto, Indonesia yesterday.
The 29-year-old battled in a breakaway group of 17 riders that decided the stage victory but lost out at the finish line.
Japan's Masakazu Ito of the Aisan Racing Team took victory ahead of Australia's Jai Crawford of the RTS Racing Team while Taiwan's Feng Chun Kai of the Action Cycling Team completed the podium.
Zamri had stayed in touch at the front of the breakaway group until the top three attacked on a climb with 1.5 kilometres to go. That resulted in Zamri finishing six seconds behind the winners.
Teammates Harrif Salleh, Shobry Abdullah, Saufi Mat Senan and Kim Do Hyeong all finished in the peloton that arrived one minute and 20 seconds after the winner, while youngster Faiz Syarifuddin Abdul Kadir was the only one who failed to stay in the main bunch. The race continues today with a 124.5km stage from Muara Sijunjung to Harau. By Arnaz M. Khairul
