Affize leads by example

THE short-handed Young Tigers A made light of their injury situation to beat Hougang United 3-1 at the Yishun Stadium yesterday to move up to third in the S-League table with captain Affize Faisal Mamat scoring twice.

With another four players called for the national senior team's friendly against Sri Lanka today, Tigers coach Ong Kim Swee was only able to name three outfield players on the bench.

It mattered little however as A. Thamil Arasu scored from the penalty spot in the 20th minute to put the national Under-23 team 1-0 ahead after Hougang's Fazli Jaffar handled inside the box before Affize scored a rare goal from a free-kick in the 39th minute to make it 2-0 at the break.

Jordan Webb reduced the deficit for Hougang five minutes after half-time only for left-back Affize, who had not scored a goal in a competitive match for the Tigers prior to yesterday, to bag his second of the night in the 90th minute.

Young Tigers should be significantly strengthened for their next match against Geylang United on Thursday at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
