OPTIMISTIC: Coach believes Pahang will be no pushovers

AFTER earning promotion to the Super League, Pahang will be hoping to continue their fine form in the Malaysia Cup which begins on Aug 22.

Pahang, the Premier League runners-up, however, have a tough battle ahead as they have Selangor, T-Team and Sarawak for company in Group D.

The two-time champions need to finish in the top two bracket to advance to the quarter-finals.

Pahang coach Dollah Salleh is confident his team can gain good results in the Malaysia Cup.

"We will not be pushovers. My boys are brimming with confidence after earning Super League promotion," said Dollah yesterday.

"We are satisfied with the amazing progress of the side these last few months. Our strength is that we can concentrate on every game the same way."

Dollah, however, picked Selangor and T-Team as the group favourites.

"If we want to progress beyond the group stage, we will have to beat them but we must not forget Sarawak, who, I believe, will want redemption after being relegated," added the former international.

Led by national striker Azamuddin Mohd Akil, Pahang, however, failed to sign guest players as the best were already taken up.

"We tried for several big names but our attempts failed. I did receive a few requests from those wanting to play for Pahang but they did not fit into my plans.

"I want only quality players and not bench warmers for the Malaysia Cup. We, however, have a good squad to pose a serious threat," Dollah added.

The east coast side earned promotion after edging Kedah on penalties in last month's ill-tempered play-off final.

Pahang will open their Malaysia Cup campaign against T-Team at Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan on Aug 22.

Pahang’s assault will be led by national striker Azamuddin Mohd Akil.
