Date with destiny for Frenz United Red, Blue

AS if pre-ordained, the boys from Frenz United Football Academy adhered to the script as they overcame their semi-final hurdles to earn the right to contest the Frenz Trophy Under-14 final at UiTM Shah Alam Stadium on July 1.

The final hurdle to the final prove a contrasting one for the two Frenz United teams.

While Frenz United Blue booked their ticket thanks to a 11th minute strike by striker Mohd Akhmar Haiqal Azhar for a 1-0 win over Victoria Institution, Frenz United Red overcame a scare before advancing.

After an impressive run of seven games, scoring 52 goals without conceding one in the group matches and quarter-finals, Mat Dinos Talib's charges were dragged to a penalty shoot-out by SMK Meru, Klang, after the tie ended 2-2.

Muhamad Hakim Kamarulzaman twice (third, 55th minutes) fired Meru ahead only for Mohd Hafizuddin Mohd Zuki to equalise (16th, 60th) on both occasions.

The drama extended to the shoot-out, as the teams were tied 2-2 after five kicks each, forcing sudden death.

Both scored their first sudden-death kicks but Meru's Muhammad Aizad Mohd Apandi, scorer of eight goals against Pendamai FC in the tournament's opening day, missed his while Frenz United captain, Muhammad Na'aim Abdul Razak, cooly slotted home.

RESULTS -- Semi-finals: Frenz United Blue 1 SMK Victoria 0; Frenz United Red 2 SMK Meru 2 (Frenz United win 4-3 on penalties).

FIXTURES -- Friday (3rd-4th placing): SMK Meru v SMK Victoria ((INSPEN Std, 8.30pm); Friday -- Final: Frenz United Red v Frenz United Blue (UiTM Shah Alam Stadium, 8.45pm, Live on Astro Arena 801).
