ARMED Forces are one point away from winning their first title in the M-League since 1997 after breaking down USM FC's stubborn resistance in a 2-1 win in a Premier League match in Penang on Monday.
Striker Hairuddin Omar scored from a quick counter-attack in the fourth minute before USM drew level through S. Veenod in the 45th minute. Venice Elphi turned hero with a spectacular goal from the by-line in the 56th minute.
Forces lead the standings with 48 points, five ahead of second-placed Pahang with two remaining rounds.
They face Muar MC at the MBPJ Stadium on Friday before completing their season against Pos Malaysia at Selayang Stadium on July 13.
A draw with Muar will guarantee Forces the league title and promotion to the Super League.
Even if Forces earn only a point from their two remaining matches and Pahang win both their games, the army side will still win the title on goal difference.
"We should clinch the league title on Friday but we cannot be too confident as football is unpredictable. We must not take Muar lightly," said coach B. Sathiananthan in Penang on Monday. By Ajitpal Singh
