Buck up, contractors told

PETALING JAYA: Lau Weng San, assemblyman for Kampung Tunku and organising secretary for DAP Selangor, wants to ensure that Petaling Jaya becomes a clean city.

Lau recently met up with some cleaning contractors appointed by Petaling Jaya City Council in SS3 here to discuss about  problems in his area.

"Many restaurant workers  in this area are taking the easy way out by dumping rubbish, waste and other trash into the drains, which clog them. It doesn't help when other Malaysians follow suit.

"There are three types of cleaning contractors appointed by the council and these are waste busters, waste collectors and cleaning contractors.

"The waste collectors are the ones who collect your garbage every two days.

"The cleaning contractors on the other hand do things like cut grass outside your home, clean drains and so on.

"The waste busters will help you get rid of waste from your garden or help you dispose of things which you want to throw out like an old broken piano."

"I will monitor the newly appointed cleaning contractors and ensure that they do their job." he

"Right now, I will give the  contractors time to clean up clogged drains.

"If, for example, members of the public make more than 10  complaints against them for not performing their jobs satisfactorily, they can get suspended," he said.

Resident Chan Tuck Ho said: "I live in the SS3  area and I am fed up of having to put up with smelly drains. It is also disgusting to  see drains  clogged with garbage.

"They are prime breeding grounds for rodents, mosquitoes and other insects," he said, adding that they are a health hazard.
