ANNUAL PRODUCTION:The musical is performed by the school’s primary, secondary and former students

CATCH the Malaysian versions of Tracy Turnblad, Edna Turnblad and Link Larkin, and other characters in Cempaka Schools' presentation of  Hairspray, the musical.

Licensed by Music Theatre International in New York, the  musical is performed by the school's  primary, secondary and former students.

Cempaka Schools founder mentor Datuk Freida Pilus said the show was part of the school's annual box office productions.

"Every year, we  have different shows.

"This year we decided to stage a performance based on the famous 1988 film entitled Hairspray.

"This  enthralling musical  showcases the school's wonderful young vocal and musical talents," she added.

She said the students had worked  hard for  seven weeks to make sure that it would be a success.

"I am sure  the public will love it," said Freida, adding that the school's productions had been well received  in the past.

Hairspray will be performed at their Cheras campus on June 15,16,17,22, 23 and 24  at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at RM55, RM70, RM85 and RM90.

Fateh Don Idzham, who plays Edna Turnblad, said he found it hard at first  to act as Tracy Turnblad's mother.

"After several practice sessions, I  started to enjoy the character," he said.

Recently, the school  invited the residents of Agape Home, Persatuan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Kajang Selangor, Open Hands Kajang, Shalom House, Rumah Keluarga Kami, Start Society and Child Information, Learning and Development Centre Malaysia, Hospis Malaysia, Charis Home, Little Sisters of the Poor, Down's Syndrome Association of Malaysia, Yellow House and Desa Amal Jireh Christian Association for a matinee show of the musical.

Freida said it was the school's tradition to stage a charity show before the actual event takes place.
