City Hall to build middle-cost homes

AFFORDABLE:Council to tie up with developers to build homes below RM400,000

EFFORTS to enable the middle-income group to purchase an affordable home in the city is afoot as City Hall is embarking on the development of middle-cost housing scheme.

Acknowledging the difficulties of middle-income earners to purchase homes in the city due to the  soaring  prices of houses, KL mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib said City Hall is in talks with several  developers to jointly develop affordable homes  below RM400,000.

"We are aware of this issue as many middle-income households are not qualified to buy the low-cost units, neither could they afford to purchase the high-end properties," said Ahmad Phesal.

In this regard, he has formed a special task force which will identify the allowable development percentage and key features of middle-cost housing   to ensure a well-balanced development between the low-cost and luxury housing development schemes in the city.

Phesal said  two developers are currently in talks with City Hall about the middle-cost housing development.

"The first developer wants to develop a middle-cost housing project but we have requested them to build the houses  below RM400,000 while the other developer wanted a 50:50 project development plan, that is,  50 per cent high-end units and the other half middle-cost units," Phesal said.

However the details of the housing projects such as how many units  to be built, location, and project initiation date have yet to be finalised.

Phesal said this  at Sentul Utama Condominium where he  handed over the keys to  680 housebuyers of Block C and D who had waited  15 years for their units to complete.

The housing project which started in 1992 was  abandoned  in  1997 due to the global financial crisis.

However in 2006, a court order was issued to revive the  project by the same developer who was  under a new management.
