MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL:Cheras Leisure Mall’s lantern competition has twinkling lanterns depicting fairy tales, flora and fauna hanging from the ceiling

WALK into the "enchanted garden" of Cheras Leisure Mall and you will be spellbound by over 30 lanterns creatively depicting fairy tales hanging from the ceiling.

The lanterns are being displayed at the mall in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The lanterns were made by the public using  materials such as paper cups, plastic spoons and bottles, buttons, and batik.

Several lanterns were fashioned like the mushroom house from Alice in Wonderland , while others were based on various kinds of flora and fauna.

All the lanterns were  decorated with colourful LED  twinkling lights.

The lanterns were submissions for the Creative Lantern-Making Contest 2012 organised by the mall. It was open to those aged 15 and above.

Lanterns will be judged by professionals from local art schools and institutions of higher learning based on creativity, workmanship, lighting, how eco-friendly  they are,  the materials used, and the overall presentation.

Among the judges are  University Teknologi MARA National Design Centre senior lecturer Ramlan Abdullah, National Visual Arts Gallery curator Hisyam Amir, Persatuan Pelukis Malaysia vice-president Yee Fuh Wen,  Chin Wan Kee from the  Malaysian Institute of Art, and Art Generation Studio vice-president Low Kay Hooi.

A total cash prize of RM28,000 awaits winners.

The champion will receive  RM3,000 plus prizes worth RM3,165.

The runner-up will receive  RM2,500 and prizes worth RM2,699.

The second runner-up will take home  RM2,000 and prizes worth RM1,398.

Fifteen consolation prize winners will  each take home RM500 and prizes worth RM400. All winners will also receive a trophy.

PPB Group  Bhd chief operating officer Eapen Thomas said the contestants  showcased a wealth of talent through their lanterns.

"The contestants  outdid themselves and I commend them for their effort and creativity," said Thomas.

A Mid-Autumn Street Party will be held at 7pm today outside the mall.

MY FM deejays such as Wai Fun, Jason and Jym, together with 13 local  artistes, will entertain visitors at the event.

The lantern exhibition is until Oct 5 at the ground floor of the mall's concourse.
