RIDE ATTITUDE: The Superbikers Association Malaysia hopes to change the public’s perception of motorcyclists and promote responsible and safe riding habits
1MALAYSIA Bike Fest 2012, which will involve a number of government agencies and motor sports corporations, is set to take place at Bukit Jalil National Stadium next month.
Organised by Superbikers Association Malaysia (Sam), a non-profit organisation for owners of 500cc and above motorcycles, the three-day event will start on May 11.
Sam president Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman said the event is aimed at promoting responsible, safe and correct riding habits among Malaysian bikers as well as to increase awareness of motorcycle sports and technologies.
"We also hope to change the public's perception of bikers.
"They are often associated with illegal racing and are blamed for most accidents," said Halim.
Among the agencies taking part are the Armed Forces, Civil Defence Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Road Transport Department, Royal Malaysian Navy, and Royal Malaysian Police.
There will be at least 50 booths.
Among the attractions are a motor show, stunt show, riding and driving simulators, brass band performance and promotions by the participating corporations and retailers. The bikefest will be preceded with an 11-day bike convoy of 66 Sam bikers.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Sam's executive chairman, will lead the Jelajah 1Malaysia (1Malaysia Tour) convoy which will be flagged off on May 1 in Johor Baru, Johor.
With the tag line "1Penyatuan, 1Haluan" (1Unity, 1Direction), the convoy will tour Peninsular Malaysia and is expected to arrive at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on May 11 at 8.30pm for the opening ceremony of the bikefest.
Halim said 210 TV personalities and artistes have agreed to join them at different stop points.
Among them are Hot FM DJ Farah Fauzana and singer Jamal Abdillah.
The convoy will be make stopovers in Seremban, Negri Sembilan; Malacca; Besut, Terengganu; Ipoh, Perak and Bentong, Pahang; among others.
The opening ceremony at the stadium will be officiated by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
"Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid might take the opportunity to talk to the Prime Minister on issues regarding motorcycles and bikers such as a reduction in tax on motorcycles," said Halim.
Sam was established in 2004. There are over 100 clubs with over 4,000 members throughout the country.
