HOME AGAIN:Kedah-born Khoo Sui Hoe, now in the US, uses bright colours in his latest paintings to remember Malaysia

KHOO Sui Hoe, 73, a renowned local artist from Kedah and now based in the United States, is back for his 49th solo exhibition.

Twenty-seven of his paintings  are being showcased in the exhibition titled, Inscapes Through The Years.

Khoo started painting professionally in 1961 after graduating from the  Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.

"I emphasised  figurative drawing this time around. Last year, I focused on landscapes," said Khoo.

Khoo uses bright colours in most of his paintings as he remembers Malaysia as a sunny and bright place, compared with northern United States where it's always gloomy.

He said that most of his paintings were inspired by places he had visited.

"I saw different cultures and traditions  in my travels."

He said he visits Malaysia twice a year for inspiration.

He  said that the best time for him to start painting is as early as 6am.

Khoo said that if he  were to have a next life, he would continue to paint.

"I haven't accomplished my mission yet, and painting will always be a part of me," he said.

Khoo said that he idolised several artists in Europe, such as Marc Chagall, Henry Marttise and Vincent Van Gogh.

Khoo won first prize in the Oil, Malaysian Art and Craft competition in 1965, honourable mention in the Salon Malaysia Art competition in 1969,  the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund Grant in 1974, and Certificate of Merits, Asian Art Now, Las Vegas Art Museum in 2002 and 2004.

The exhibition, ongoing at Pipal Fine Art, The Gardens Mall, will end on May 20.
