TERRIFIED:Traders pay RM100 monthly in protection money to avoid trouble

A GROUP of foreigners who have since monopolised the Nilai 3 Wholesale Centre in Bandar Baru Nilai,  are believed to have formed a gang which now collects protection money from the traders there.   It is learnt that the group would demand about RM100 each month from certain traders, failing which they would create problems and disrupt businesses in the area.

"To avoid problems, the traders, who are mostly locals, would just pay the protection money as they did not want their business to be disturbed.

"This problem arose because there were too many foreigners running businesses there and they had since formed their own communities, while some had formed gangs," revealed one of the traders.

Meanwhile, State Immigration Department director, Faizal Fazri Othman, said they had received information on the large number of foreigners there.

"However, the issue of protection money is out of our jurisdiction. We will continue monitoring the situation and regularly check the status of the foreigners there," he said.

He was speaking after conducting a joint operation with the Putrajaya, Selangor, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur Immigration Departments in Bandar Baru Nilai recently.

He said the department had received many complaints about the foreigners monopolising the wholesale centre, which had since caused plenty of concern among the locals.

He said investigations also revealed that several of the businesses which were being operated by the foreigners were registered under the names of locals.

Faizal added that the department would continue to monitor the situation and work with the other departments to ensure the situation does not get out of hand.
