PONTIAN: An afternoon storm swept across two villages at the Rimba Terjun subdistrict in Pontian on the first day of Hari Raya.

Many villagers were celebrating Hari Raya when the 2.30pm storm  ripped off the zinc roofs of many houses in Kampung Sungai Bunyi and Kampung Kelapa.

The storm also destroyed vegetables and crops.

Ithnin Marto, 51, said his wife Rosimah Samad, 50, and their six children aged from 11 to 22 had to seek refuge elsewhere.

"The zinc roof above my kitchen was blown 50m away and my kitchen was practically flooded.

"We had visitors at home when the storm hit," he said.

Abdul Rahman Idris, 55, said he was grateful that no one was hurt during the storm. His zinc roof was also blown away.

"I was entertaining my relatives when the storm hit. It was really embarrassing for me when my home suddenly became roofless," he said.

Meanwhile, a spokesman from the Rimba Terjun sub-district village committee said he would seek financial assistance for the villagers who had suffered damages from the storm.
