CAMPUS PAGEANT: Klang Valley undergraduates strut their stuff in the Miss & Mister Malaysia Campus 2012
KUALA LUMPUR: THIRTY-FOUR students discarded their textbooks and notes - albeit temporarily - as they took to the catwalk to vie for the second Miss & Mister Malaysia Campus 2012 titles here recently.
The 18 boys and 16 girls were short-listed after a search around various institutions of higher learning in the Klang Valley -- namely, University College Sedaya International (UCSI), Taylor's University, Perdana University, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) and Tunku Abdul Rahman College -- in June.
Almost 400 entries were received, from which the organiser, Adelicious Entertainment, picked 34 finalists.
Adrian Winson, chairman of Adelicious, said the contest was held with the objective of providing opportunities for students to enhance their personal development while empowering them with knowledge and experience.
"Being the first and only beauty pageant in the country for Malaysian college and university students, the Miss and Mister Malaysia Campus 2012 contest's main goal is to promote student empowerment," said Winson.
The undergraduate candidates also vied for other subsidiary titles, such as Miss & Mister Talent, Miss & Mister Photogenic, Miss & Mister Cover Prince & Princess, Keep Slim Best Body & Favourite Hunk.
The highlight of the grand final was the talent round, whereby the contestants showcased their skills and prowess in singing, dancing, acts of illusion and martial arts demonstrations.
As expected, inexperience -- and also nerves -- ruled the day during the grand final as the aspirants traipsed and flitted on the stage for the four rounds of casual outfits, sportswear, beach attire and formal wear.
The top five were picked for a question-and-answer session, following which the main winners were determined.
Crowned Mister Malaysia Campus 2012 was 24-year-old Uriel Shanley Augustin of Taylor's University, who won a RM4,900 sceptre and other prizes worth about RM9,000.
The business student will be competing at the Mister Malaysia International finals at year's end.
Inti University student Jany Lee Sing Yee, was named Miss Malaysia Campus 2012, and took home similar prizes as Augustin's.
Both Augustin and Lee secured double wins, with each also awarded the Mister and Miss Photogenic titles respectively.
Lee, 19, said although she was confident of making it to the final round, her win came as a surprise.
"I didn't expect to win as the other finalists were equally good," said the mass communications undergraduate, who will be going to Singapore in January for the Miss Asian pageant.
Also making it a double-victory was 23-year-old Vchin Pua Wooi Chin of Universiti Utara Malaysia, whose taekwondo skills at brick-smashing earned him the Mister Talent title while his physique won him the Keep Slim Favourite Hunk crown.
The Miss and Mister Malaysia Campus 2012 contest was sponsored by KeepSlim.
