AN incentive of RM5,000 will be given to Federal Territories athletes if they win gold medals at the Pahang Malaysia Games next month.
The incentive was announced by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin on Saturday.
"An additional RM1,000 incentive will also be given to the gold medal recipients if they manage to win more than 50 gold medals instead of the target set which is 45 gold medals," he said in his speech before handing over the Federal Territories flag to the Federal Territories Chef de Mission Datuk Adnan Md Ikshan.
The Games will run from July 7 - 16.
Raja Nong Chik said the Federal Territories contingent had performed well in the 2010 Games in Malacca.
"The contingent was overall third best as the athletes managed to win 43 gold, 42 silver and 49 bronze medals," he said, adding that the FT contingent had been preparing for the Games since last year.
Raja Nong Chik said that the Federal Territories Sports Council (MSWP), as the council that coordinates the preparation for the Games, had helped various sports associations by providing allowances to athletes and coaches.
"The council also helped the athletes by providing and giving them exposures in various training and competition, either in or out of the country and they have also been giving sports equipment to associations for the benefit of the athletes.
"Hopefully, with all the incentives that are provided, it will help to develop Federal Territories' athletes further," Raja Nong Chik said.
At the same event, Raja Nong Chik also launched the new logo for the MSWP that is now known as WIPERS (Wilayah Persekutuan) as the council now has been given a statutory body status.
